Slow Down; Have an Urgent Calm - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Slow Down; Have an Urgent Calm - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Donât be quick, fast, or in a hurry (all the time). Be unhurried (within reason, of course). Be markedly unrushed. Slow down when you talk, walk, respond, ask a question, enter a room, shake hands, and leave a room. Be confident enough to take time. Move only when necessary. If you slow down. Youâll go a lot faster. The more time you give yourself, the more status people will give you. Quick, jerky motions make you look nervous. Plus, when you talk and move fast, itâs hard for people to absorb what youâre saying. Pause as if you mean it. Donât let other people take you out of your calm. Talk at a slowed-down pace, but think fast. Be quiet so you can see and hear more. One of my coaching clients told me, âOur CEO has a distinct sense of self-containment. Heâs never in a hurry, but heâs still a beat faster than most people.â Your composure will be contagious. People will ask you fewer questions and challenge or attack you less when youâre calm and slowed down.

10 Best Cities for Young Professionals
10 Best Cities for Young Professionals In a world full of opportunity, how do you decide where to live as a young professional? Whether youâre an entrepreneur, freelancer, or employee at a traditional company, when youâre just starting your career, youâll want to consider the following factors: Starting salary: What is the average starting salary of the city? If youâve been in your field for a few years, youâll likely earn above this figure, but itâs good to have a baseline so you know generally what to expect in terms of compensation. You can search for starting salary by city here. Job opportunities: Which cities have the most entry-level or associate-level opportunities in your field? If you donât have any professional connections in the city you want to move to, conduct a quick search on LinkedIn to get a general idea of a cityâs opportunities. If job prospects look sparse, consider another location. Affordable housing: What is the average rent or home price in the area? How does this compare to the salary youâre expecting? As a general rule of thumb, 30% of your pre-tax salary should go to rent. If rent is higher than this, you may need to prepare to make budget cuts in other areas or look at other more affordable cities. Networking opportunities: Sometimes the most valuable business lessons are learned outside of the office. Happy hours are a great way to network with other professionals in your industry or get to know your coworkers better. Does your city have a good bar and restaurant scene? To find out, conduct a quick Yelp search for happy hours in your city. While many recent college graduates flock to cities like Los Angeles and New York City, the high cost of living makes these cities unrealistic for those just starting their careers who may be financially independent. Instead, turn to nearby smaller cities for the best of both worlds: access to jobs and networking associated with a big city, but with more affordable housing. Once youâve moved to a city where you can thrive as a young professional, youâll want to excel in your field and hit the ground running. Here are some early career tips: Find a mentor. 70% of Fortune 500 companies offer employee mentoring programs. Mentors help develop your leadership skills and increase your confidence and motivation, which is crucial early on in your career. Keep up with industry news. Ask coworkers what publications and websites they keep up with or what podcasts they listen to. Being educated about whatâs going on in your industry will show your supervisors that you care about your field. Be solution-oriented. Always look for solutions to problems to show that youâre invested in project outcomes. If you need to report an issue, your boss will be more receptive to your asks if youâve already formulated a solution. Stay engaged. Your supervisor will notice. Engaged workers are 27% more likely to report âexcellentâ performance. Companies with highly engaged employees see lower turnover rates and increased productivity. Take risks. Even though youâre just starting out your career, be confident and donât be afraid of failure. There are valuable lessons in mistakes! Just make sure the risks you take arenât big enough to cost you your job or the trust of your colleagues. Balance work and life. Youâll avoid early-career burnout, and employees with a good work-life balance are less likely to develop anxiety and depression. Establish boundaries and avoid checking your email early in the morning or late at night. Go for a walk. Stanford researchers found that walking boosts creative output by 60%. Getting out of the office is a great way to feel refreshed and get a change of scenery, which is especially valuable if youâre stuck in a creative rut. Esurance analyzed the top 100 most populous U.S. cities and ranked them based on starting salary, job opportunities, home prices, networking opportunities and median city age to find the best cities for young professionals. You can check out the winners in the visual below. Courtesy of Esurance.

8 honest-to-God careers lessons we learnt from Santa Claus - Debut
8 honest-to-God careers lessons we learnt from Santa Claus - Debut Do you know who the most successful businessperson of all time is? No, silly, not Donald Trump. The answer, obviously, is Santa Claus. Santa, Father Christmas, Chris Cringle. Whatever you like to call him, the fact remains that Santa is the original O.G. The single greatest entrepreneurial mind ever to grace Planet Earth.* Why? Were about to explain, and maybe youll pick up some neat career tips on the ride. *We at Debut will not accept any conjecture implying the non-existence of Santa Claus. Dont be a Scrooge. Brand recognition is key Santa knows when youve been sleeping. He knows when youre awake. You know that because there are a hundred million songs out there about how hes coming to town, coming down the chimney, kissing your mother etc. You can spot his red coat and bushy beard a mile away and hes been played by more actors than you can shake a candy cane at. That, friends, is spot-on branding. Career lesson: We feel like we say this a lot, but personal branding is everything. Get your face out there, make sure everyone knows youre good at what you do, and explore different forms of media to expand your presence. Sponsorship goes a long way Santa knows all about the merits of cold hard cash and hes not above doing a little shilling. Hes been a brand ambassador for Coca Cola for more than 80 years and hes also appeared in a few adverts for MMs. Career lesson: Sponsorship deals might be a bit advanced for you at this stage but definitely link up with people that have similar brands to yours. Big each other up, share each others content and itll be beneficial to all of you. Be fair to your workers As Will Ferrell so helpfully demonstrates here, elves love Santa. And its easy to see why, hes a great boss. All they have to do is work a few intense shifts around December and they get all the perks of working in the North Pole one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Plus, they get to keep the awesome uniforms. Career lesson: If you go on to employ people, make sure youre treating them right. Theyre the glue that hold your operation together. Give them perks, listen to their concerns and tell them when theyve done well. Oh, and definitely pay them fairly. Charity is super important For all his business acumen, Santa is of course a well-known philanthropist. His industry has provided income and care for the elf community for years and he has rescued countless reindeer. Not only that, but he gives out all of his product for free and has made thousands of voluntary appearances at shopping malls and childrens hospitals around the world. Career lesson: Dont sniff at the idea of charity. Corporate responsibility and sustainability is a huge part of business these days and volunteering can reveal talents you didnt know you had. Speed is of the essence Delivering presents to the worlds 3 billion children takes ruthless efficiency and no-ones more aware of this than Santa. To do this, The Telegraph reckons his sleigh would have to travel at roughly 1800 miles per second, which is about 8 and a half thousand times the speed of sound. Thats probably why youve never seen him on Christmas Eve. Career lesson: Efficiency and innovation is crucial to anything you do. Its easy to miss a window of opportunity. And lets not pretend that Santas amazing feat would be possible without state-of-the-art technology. Make sure you keep up with the latest news on that side you might just be able to open a window for yourself. Take advantage of untapped markets If its true that Santa delivers to every child on earth, then hes definitely treading on some trade ground that hasnt been touched yet. Just shows what a humanitarian he is I dont see anyone else delivering presents to Middle Eastern children, do you? Career lesson: Every conference and contact will turn out to be useful to you at some point. The trick is being able to spot an opportunity that no-one else would take. It could be that all important one. Have a holiday every now and then As hard as he works, Santa realises the importance of taking a break. Ever seen a portly bearded man poolside in a resort in the Bahamas 11 months out of the year? Yup, thats him. Career lesson: Absolutely dont work yourself into the ground! Sometimes your job can consume you. Its important to keep some of that energy you invest in it for yourself. Maybe even a side-hustle or two. Always be positive The best thing about Santa Claus by far is his indomitable spirit. No matter how bad the world gets, no matter how brutal humanity is to one another, no matter how often we lose our smiles, he come every year to replace them. Career lesson: When things dont work out, dont get discouraged. Try different routes, keep your head up and do what you do best. Merry Christmas, everyone!
